Born in Palermo, Santo Piazzese is one of the new Italian mystery writers. He has a degree in Biological Sciences and is a teacher by profession. Piazzese writes novels set in his hometown but does not embrace neither the mafia style nor the one brought forward by Andrea Camilleri in whose books local dialect plays an important role. Piazzese's novels are more bluesy, ironic and cynical. His first work, I delitti di Via Medina-Sidonia was published in 1996 followed by La Doppia Vita di M Laurent in 1998. The both feature the amateur detective Lorenzo La Marca, a biologist.
