MASSIMO CARLOTTO |
Born
in Padua, Massimo Carlotto was at the center one of the most controversial
law cases in Italian history. On January 20 1976, Carlotto, at that time
member of an Italian left-wing movement, casually found the brutally stabbed
body of Margherita Magello in his hometown. Instead of going directly
to the police he tried to save her, therefore staining his cloths with
blood. The Italian law however did not believe his version and just before
the end of the appeal his lawyer advised him to run. He first went to
Paris and then to Mexico and for many years was able to live hiding from
the police. The network of help however was broken when a Mexican lawyer
betrayed Carlotto. Arrested, tortured, he was sent back to Italy despite
the international warrant of arrest had never been issued (written but
left in a drawer). Following more trials, mistakes, changes in the Italian
law, his was finally sentenced to prison. In April 1993 Carlotto was pardoned
by the Italian government. Now a free man, he started writing. His first book is
an autobiography, but later, thanks also to the experience acquired in
jail, he started writing a series. The main character, called Alligator,
is a blues singer, former convict, who becomes a detective and, just like
Carlotto, has a thirst for truth and justice. These novels have been successful
in Italy and have recently been translated into French as well as German and soon will be available even in English. He
has also written a book on the Argentinean desaparecidos. Carlotto currently
lives in Cagliari. |
