DEATH AND THE JOYFUL WOMAN

A millionaire is murdered and Inspector Felse, after sifting through the few shreds of evidence, finally arrests Kitty Norris, his teenaged son Dominic's first love. A young man's infatuation soon becomes something far more dangerous, though, as Dominic takes on Kitty's cause - in direct opposition to his father's investigation.

Annet Beck has the kind of breathtaking beauty that strikes people dumb, and young teacher Tom Kenyon, a lodger in her parents' house, is no exception. When Annet disappears, Tom determines to find out where and why.

A NICE DERANGEMENT OF EPITAPHS (US title WHO LIES HERE?)

When the tomb of Jan Treverra is opened to reveal two recently dead bodies, neither of which is Treverra's, Detective Inspector George Felse, on holiday nearby, steps in to investigate the murders.

BLACK IS THE COLOUR OF MY TRUE-LOVE'S HEART

Gathered for a folk music seminar at the neo-Gothic country mansion called Follymead, musicians and students are in for a surprise when talented singer Liri Palmer tries to send a message to the audience, just before tragedy strikes.

THE GRASS-WIDOW'S TALE

With her policeman husband gone to investigate yet another murder on the eve of her 41st birthday, Bunty Felse feels dejected until she finds herself involved in kidnapping, chases and murder. Bishop's smoothly flowing voice deftly narrates the story, keeping the tension and suspense moving forward. Balancing timing and pace with the momentum of the story, she adroitly dramatizes the emotions of the characters. The minor characters' voices are as easily distinguished and individualized as those of the main characters. The Scottish accents are most enjoyable.

THE HOUSE OF GREEN TURF

MOURNING RAGA

As a favour to his girlfriend Tossa's erratic filmstar mother agrees to escort an heiress back to her father in India. But travelling with the precocious Anjli is no sinecure - and the task of delivering her proves less than easy, especially when they become embroiled in a murder investigation.
