Literary Criticism

It is no surprise that Sharan Newman is considered to be the new Ellis Peters. Her books satisfy each reader: not just the one interested in whodunits or the lover of historical mysteries but also the historian. The sociological and theological aspects mentioned in her novels are bound to appeal to whoever is interested in the Middle Ages. The author portrays medieval France convincingly showing a considerable knowledge of the times, ways and the people of the period. All of this placed within a major plot and seemingly minor sub plots that by the end of the book merge into one. Certainly one of the most exciting and interesting series the Bastulli Mystery Library has had the pleasure to read.

CATHERINE LEVENDEUR SERIES

DEATH COMES AS EPIPHANY

Catherine LeVendeur is a young scholar at the Convent of the Paraclete, a convent famous for learning and prayer...and its most famous abbess, the fabled Heloise. Catherine's natural curiosity and individualism have always set her apart and she has come to the convent to conquer her sin of pride But service can come in many forms...A manuscript that the convent produced for the great Abbe Suger has disappeared and rumors have surfaced that the book contains sacrilegious passages and will be used to condemn Heloise's famous lover - Peter Abelard. Catherine must find the manuscript and discover who has altered the text before it destroys all she holds dear.

THE DEVIL'S DOOR

A wealthy countess lies dying at the convent of the Paraclete, brutally beaten by unknown assailants. Her last wish is to take the veil, to become one of the order, but she is unwilling - or unable - to name her killer. Catherine LeVendeur's curiosity and her keen sense of justice demand that she find out he identity of the noblewoman's attacker.

THE WANDERING ARM

The mummified arm of St. Aldhelm has been stolen from the Salisbury Cathedral in England and hidden somewhere in Paris, passing from pious to treacherous hands by means of murder most foul. Catherine's husband Edgar is approached to help find the Anglo-Saxon relic and bring in safely home.

STRONG AS DEATH

Ex-novice Catherine LeVendeur and her Saxon husband, Edgar, desperate to have a child, go on pilgrimage to pray at the fabled Spanish shrine of Santiago de Compostela. They encounter mad monks, jongleurs, a possibly reformed whore, and four elderly knights, two of whom are murdered.

CURSED IN THE BLOOD

The fifth story in the series finds Catherine LeVendeur venturing into the cold and tumultuous homeland of her husband - only to realize the vast differences between Edgar's family and her own. After making the pilgrimage to Compostela and giving birth to a son, Catherine is looking forward to an idyllic life at home in Paris. Yet her contentment is shattered when she and Edgar receive news from his family that Edgar's two oldest brothers have been ambushed and murdered.

THE DIFFICULT SAINT

When Catherine's estranged sister's marriage to a German lord ends with her being accused of his murder, Catherine knows she must do everything she can to save her sister's life. And when Catherine and her brood travel to Germany to begin sleuthing in a dangerously anti-Semitic climate, it becomes clear that Catherine and Edgar's long-dreamt-of life of peace remains in the distant future - if they live to see it at all.

TO WEAR A WHITE CLOAK

Catherine LeVendeur is an independent spirit fiercely loyal to both her faith and her family. The two sometimes conflict and while she has experienced love and loss, her life is committed to preserving what peace she can for those she loves. And that faith and loyalty will be sorely tested when a Knight Templar is discovered brutally murdered in their home after Catherine and her family return to France after a long absence. Catherine's closely held secret about her family's Jewish roots is threatened to be revealed. Catherine will not give up the Holy Mother church ... but neither will she abandon those of her family who have chosen to return to their fathers' faith. And in order to save them all, Catherine will have to discover the person who would dare kill a soldier of God and why her family would be targeted in such a horrendous fashion.

HERESY

When her dearest friend in the world, Astrolabe, the son of the fabled theologian Peter Abelard and Heloise, flees wrongful prosecution for the vicious murder of a young woman, Catherine's family takes him in to hide. But there are darker forces than murder at work here. Someone wishes to use Astrolabe to complete the destruction of his father's fame in the name of faith...and there are those that would see the destruction of the very order of Christian life...
