Born in Bolton, Lancashire, John Grant, strangely enough, is a doctor. Educated at the University of London, he has served as general practitioner and pathologist in England, clinical pathologist in Germany as well as being lecturer for the University of Hong Kong and microbiologist. He was also head of the bacteriology unit at the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of the University of London from 1971 to 1988 and attained the rank of major in the British Army while he was posted in Germany. Despite all these qualifications and experience, Grant is better known as the creator of Lovejoy under the pen name Jonathan Gash. The first in the series, The Judas Pair, won the John Creasey Award for the best first crime novel of the year in 1977. Grant has also started a new medical thriller series featuring Dr. Clare Burtonall. He currently has retired from medicine, lives with his wife in Essex, has three daughters and four grandchildren.

LOVEJOY SERIES

THE JUDAS PAIR

Lovejoy knows that the legendary Judas Pair of flintlock pistols are just that - a legend. Or are they? By the time he finds out the truth, two people are dead, and Lovejoy has to pull a nifty scam to avoid the same fate. First in the Lovejoy series.

THE GRAIL TREE

SPEND GAME

THE VATICAN RIP

In this fast-paced and witty mystery, Lovejoy is asked to recover a family heirloom. Unfortunately, the Chippendale table in question now sits in the Vatican. Though matters of protocol, a brutal murder, and several romantic entanglements slow his progress, Lovejoy once again triumphs, finding his way to a most ingenious solution.

FIREFLY GADROON

Lovejoy - unscrupulous conniver, feckless lecher, and more important, gifted visionary who loves beautiful antiques more than life itself - marshals all of his diverse skills to revenge the murder of an old friend. Jonathan Gash's entertaining expertise covers everything from Queen Anne baby walkers and stumpwork boxes to the ultimate antique: the hand-hammered silver Reverse Gadroon. This bawdy fast-paced adventure - in which the all-time scamp must confront an international ring of antiques smugglers and murderers - is an entertaining delight from start to finish.

THE SLEEPERS OF ERIN

THE GONDOLA SCAM

Connoisseur of antiques, rhapsodizer of women, and all-around scamp, Lovejoy is hired by a millionaire collector to "rescue" every art treasure in Venice before the fabled city sinks into the sea. His winning ways, flexible ethics, and resourceful chicanery are put to a vigorous test by the murderous men and dangerous women who cross his gondola's path.

PEARLHANGER

Looking for a missing husband is not usually Lovejoy's cup of tea, but this missing husband happens to be an antiques dealer. As usual the police are less than tolerant of Lovejoy's motives and methods - and, as usual, Lovejoy uses his charm, wit, and a little scam of his own to see that justice triumphs.

THE TARTAN SELL (UK Title: The Tartan Ringers)

MOONSPENDER

Lovejoy doesn't mind an occasional take, but the wholesale theft of national treasures is something else. So when "moonspenders" - antiques poachers with hi-tech metal detectors - start digging up his native East Anglia's ancient treasures, Lovejoy takes a stand.

JADE WOMAN

Lovejoy, a disreputable antiques dealer, connoisseur of women, and our hero, falls into the middle of a worldwide antique-trading scam and a ruthless Chinese crime syndicate.

THE LIES OF FAIR LADIES

PAID AND LOVING EYES

Lovejoy enters the illicit world of underground antiques when he is summoned by a shady underworld figure to judge a competition involving an antique vase. His verdict, however, sets off a chain of suspicious happenings in the antiques community - including murder - and Lovejoy soon realizes he has stumbled onto an international ring of crime. Encountering treasure troves of genuine and fake antiques, a covert KGB-like antiques organization, and a variety of beautiful women, Lovejoy juggles his love of precious objects with his desire to stay alive.

THE SIN WITHIN HER SMILE

The antiques world's roguish dealer is back in The Sin Within Her Smile - his most perilous scam to date. When Lovejoy himself is put on the block among marmalades and lawnmowers at a charity auction and billed as "Slave for a Day" - the bidding soars. To Lovejoy's alarm, two rich women vie for his services, the winner paying an outrageous sum. Lovejoy speculates nervously on what the luscious mystery woman in the pale blue chiffon could possibly want from him. He should have known. Through the mysterious woman in blue, he's soon embroiled in a scam involving Celtic gold finds. But the joke turns deadly earnest when an overinquisitive friend is found murdered. Cutting and running looks like Lovejoy's best bet, and when he's promised a priceless artifact in payment for a trip to Wales, he leaps at the opportunity. As Lovejoy sets out on his journey, the irony of his situation slowly dawns on him - his fellow travelers are those same mental patients on whose behalf he was auctioned! But the more time he spends with them - and with the townspeople - the more he realizes "sanity" is a relative term. Studded with antiques discoveries and overtures from the opposite sex, this might have been the trip of a lifetime. But when the corpses begin to pile up, Lovejoy realizes it could be his last trip ever. . . .

And the dealers blame Lovejoy. Lovejoy decides to use his own gift to assemble a mass of antiques - with any luck he might be able to bargain his way out.
